Intact estimates $660 million in Canadian Q3 2026 catastrophe losses

The estimate includes $52 million in Personal Auto losses, $390 million in Personal Property, and $173 million in Commercial lines, driven by storms and wildfires.

Canadian property and casualty insurers Intact Financial Corporation and Definity Financial Corporation released third-quarter 2026 catastrophe loss estimates, with Intact citing about $660 million in total catastrophe losses on a pre-tax basis and net of reinsurance.

Intact said the Q3 2026 loss estimate breaks down into $52 million in Personal Auto losses, $390 million in Personal Property losses, and $173 million in Commercial lines.

For the lines it said were most impacted, Intact attributed the catastrophe losses to severe weather in Canada, including storms that caused flooding plus water and wind damage across several regions, as well as wildfires in British Columbia.

Intact also noted that after relatively benign weather activity in 2025 and early 2026, recent severe events have pushed its restoration and supply chain teams to help customers recover, according to Reinsurance News.
