Marcos says Philippines will focus on managing South China Sea dispute
Speaking at the Forbes Global CEO Conference in Singapore, Marcos said Manila fears a mistake by a sailor or soldier could spark an uncontrolled escalation.
Housing-related disputes are not the focus here. SCMP Economy reports that President Ferdinand Marcos Jnr said the Philippines is resigned to managing its long running dispute with Beijing in the South China Sea, with an emphasis on avoiding dangerous escalations.
Speaking at the Forbes Global CEO Conference in Singapore, Marcos said he is not sure a resolution can be found, but the country is committed to managing the situation to prevent mistakes or misinterpretations.
Marcos added that his biggest fear is that an error by a seaman or soldier could spiral out of control.
He also reiterated Manila’s claim to sovereign rights over the waterway, saying they are backed by international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
