Nifty 50 slides 15% year-to-date amid oil, yields and uncertainty

The decline is tied to oil staying above $100 a barrel, foreign outflows, and elevated US bond yields that reflect expectations for further Federal Reserve rate hikes.

LiveMint Markets said India’s Nifty 50 is down 15% year-to-date, and experts expect the benchmark to be increasingly likely to finish the calendar year in the red.

The outlet attributed the pressure to a mix of headwinds, including higher oil prices linked to the US-Iran conflict, an earnings growth versus valuation mismatch, foreign capital outflows, limited AI trade, and rising global bond yields.

It also pointed to uncertainty around the US-Iran conflict and noted that US bond yields remain elevated as markets weigh potential further rate hikes by the Federal Reserve and concerns about rising US government debt.

Shrikant Chouhan of Kotak Neo said the near term backdrop is challenging, with sentiment likely to stay cautious amid ongoing volatility and uncertainty.
