OpenAI says teen ChatGPT guardrails fall short, research finds risk
Common Sense Media research said safety features, including parental alerts for self-harm conversations, often failed.
OpenAI said it found average use of ChatGPT by teens was relatively limited and mainly focused on “learning” activity, but also acknowledged that safety features can still fall short for this age group, according to BBC Business.
OpenAI rolled out ChatGPT for Teens in August with controls aimed at reducing problematic use, including limits on emotional dependence and parental alerts for certain concerns.
Research released the same day by non-profit Common Sense Media found ChatGPT poses an “unacceptable risk” for teens, saying safety features such as notifying parents of self-harm conversations often failed.
