Pentagon launches $350 million quantum push amid US-China rivalry
The Pentagon said the initiative is intended to strengthen US quantum capabilities to support national security, citing a June order to speed deployment and commercialization.
The Pentagon on Thursday announced a multimillion-dollar initiative to strengthen US quantum computing capabilities as competition with China over military uses of advanced technology accelerates, according to SCMP Economy.
The new program is valued at around $350 million and was announced by the Office of the Under Secretary of Defence for Research and Engineering, which SCMP Economy describes as the US Department of Defence’s chief technology adviser, with the stated goal of supporting national security.
SCMP Economy reports that Emil Michael, the undersecretary of defence for research and engineering, said quantum computing dominance is a critical priority for the Trump administration and pointed to a June executive order aimed at accelerating the technology’s deployment, commercialization, and domestic manufacturing in the United States.
