South Korea recalls its ambassador to Ukraine over North Korean POW dispute

The move follows Seoul's anger after Zelensky disclosed a prisoner transfer to South Korea and allegations that fuel shipments from South Korea to Russia helped ease shortages in July and August.

South Korea said it will recall its ambassador to Ukraine as a diplomatic dispute deepens over the transfer of North Korean prisoners of war to Seoul, according to a report by Agence France-Presse published by SCMP Economy.

The two countries have been at odds since Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky disclosed last month that the transfer had taken place, a disclosure that sparked anger in Seoul, where officials said they have put South Korean families at risk because they are in North Korea.

SCMP Economy also said the recall comes days after a media report alleged more than 176,000 tonnes of fuel, mostly diesel, were shipped from South Korea to Russia in July and August, drawing accusations that Seoul was helping alleviate Russian fuel shortages.
