South Korea tests its first domestically developed hypersonic weapon
The test involved separation from a booster rocket, followed by vertical and horizontal manoeuvring before striking a target.
South Korea flight-tested on Thursday its first domestically developed hypersonic weapon, designed to fly at least five times the speed of sound and evade missile defence systems, according to a statement cited by SCMP Economy.
The statement said the weapon separated from its booster rocket at the planned altitude, then descended and manoeuvred both vertically and horizontally before hitting a test target, but it did not specify where the test took place.
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung attended the test and said it was a major step in strengthening the country’s conventional defence capabilities, the statement said.
SCMP Economy also noted there was no immediate response from North Korea, after Pyongyang last week tested a hypersonic missile that landed in waters near Japan.
