US-China relations face Democratic criticism after Trump reception
A more upbeat mood at Washington’s Chinese National Day reception contrasted with opposition Democrats’ pushback over Trump’s approach to China.
This year’s Chinese National Day reception in Washington felt more relaxed than in recent years, with Chinese Ambassador Xie Feng delivering an upbeat opening speech that included a joke about panda ambassadors. The tone followed President Xi Jinping’s short but successful state visit to the United States.
South China Morning Post notes that Xi received an unprecedented high level reception from President Donald Trump during the visit. However, the atmosphere outside the embassy was described as decidedly different.
According to SCMP, opposition Democrats criticized Trump’s close engagement with China, calling it an example of misguided foreign policy. They framed it as a betrayal of American allies and a sell out of national interests.
