US naval chief visit to India amid stalled trade talks
The trip follows a February visit and comes as Washington considers tariff pressure tied to India’s Russian oil purchases and the trade imbalance between the two countries.
A second visit by US Admiral Samuel J. Paparo, who leads the US Pacific Command, is set to end in India after six days of meetings with senior Indian defence officials and others, highlighting continued momentum in the countries’ military engagement. South China Morning Post reports Paparo is scheduled to leave India on Thursday.
The discussions come as Washington weighs further tariff pressure on India over its purchases of Russian oil and the trade imbalance in Delhi’s favour, according to the report.
Meanwhile, Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said negotiations for a US-India trade deal have reached a plateau, the strongest sign Delhi has given that talks on market access have stalled since they began in February last year.
