Vitalik Buterin says crypto holders should not rush wallet migrations

He urged holders to take AI-accelerated cryptography risks seriously, but said migration mistakes are an immediate danger compared with any confirmed break.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin warned that AI-driven progress in mathematics could weaken existing crypto signatures and some post-quantum defenses, including the elliptic-curve cryptography used by Bitcoin and Ethereum, according to CryptoSlate.

On Oct. 7, Buterin advised crypto holders to reduce exposure where practical, but said he does not recommend scrambling to move funds into new wallets immediately, arguing that migration mistakes are a more immediate risk than any demonstrated cryptographic break.

Buterin’s comments came after Ethereum researcher Justin Drake urged the industry to prepare for “bunker mode,” including moving assets toward fresh addresses whose public keys have never been exposed on-chain.

The debate gained momentum after OpenAI published new mathematical results on Oct. 6, including machine-generated proofs formalized in Lean, though OpenAI did not report any attack on blockchain cryptography.
