Yen edges stronger as BoJ hike bets lift USD/JPY’s downside

USD/JPY is near 157.85-157.80, down 0.15% on the day, after extending a pullback from a one-and-a-half-week high near 158.50.

USD/JPY drifted lower in the Asian session on Thursday, extending the prior day’s pullback from a one-and-a-half-week high around 158.50, with spot prices near the 157.85-157.80 area. FXStreet said the pair was down 0.15% on the day and stayed within a familiar weekly range, trading near the lower end.

Support for the Japanese yen came from recent data showing Japan’s real wages rose for an eighth consecutive month in August, along with hawkish remarks from Bank of Japan board member Ayano Sato and Governor Kazuo Ueda. The outlet said the comments reinforced expectations for additional rate hikes.

At the same time, there was renewed speculation that Japanese authorities could intervene again to support the currency, adding further pressure on USD/JPY. FXStreet also noted the US dollar retained a bullish undertone near its highest level since April 2025, with FOMC minutes from September 15-16 showing officials voted unanimously to raise the federal funds rate target range.
