Solana proposal speeds block handovers using scheduled validator windows

The simulation cited by CryptoSlate cuts mean handover delay between honest validators to 17.0 milliseconds from 36.2 milliseconds, without increasing leader windows.

CryptoSlate reports that Roger Wattenhofer and Quentin Kniep have proposed speeding Solana block production by scheduling nearby validators to produce blocks in consecutive leader window groups.

The plan depends on validators providing self-reported physical locations, which the authors say introduces an unverifiable input into the order of block producers. It is intended to make fast handovers less dependent on operating near Solana’s biggest stake centers.

In simulations described in the proposal, the mean handover delay between honest validators fell to 17.0 milliseconds from 36.2 milliseconds, while no validator received more leader windows. The reordering also changes continuity of control, with three-window groups combining into longer consecutive stretches.

CryptoSlate adds that the geographic speed proposal and a companion location-registration proposal were submitted as pull requests on Sept. 29 and were still open as of Oct. 7. The draft also records six adversarial windows in succession under its proposed three-window setting.
