Bitcoin growth hinges on settlement role for payment networks
Lightspark CEO David Marcus said Bitcoin’s next wave of growth will come from infrastructure used by banks and payment networks, rather than retail spending at checkout.
David Marcus, Lightspark’s co-founder and chief executive, said Bitcoin’s next stage of growth will be driven by its use as invisible settlement infrastructure for banks and payment networks, according to an interview covered by ETF Trends.
Marcus argued that the impact for financial institutions matters more than consumers buying Bitcoin directly at checkout, comparing a Bitcoin-enabled payments layer to early internet protocols that users do not notice.
He shared that Lightspark built first on the Bitcoin Lightning Network, then shifted toward Spark, a Bitcoin layer two that allows the company to issue stablecoins directly on top of Bitcoin, the outlet reported.
Marcus also said Bitcoin’s reputation as a store of value is a prerequisite for its payment utility, and that banks and other institutions need deep liquidity before routing large cross-border transactions through the network, ETF Trends wrote.
