E-bike incidents prompt US cities and states to tighten rules

E-bikes and similar vehicles were linked to more than 155,000 emergency room visits from 2017 to 2024 and over 300 deaths, according to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Authorities across the US are cracking down on e-bikes after reports of chaotic and risky riding in multiple communities, including Bend, Oregon, and Orlando, as well as two teens riding e-bikes through a Walmart in Orange County, California, according to Insurance Journal.

The article cites federal and academic data showing the scale of harm linked to e-bikes, including more than 155,000 emergency room visits from 2017 through 2024 and over 300 deaths, based on figures from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.

In California, a University of California San Diego study found e-bike collision injuries rose from two in 2020 to 1,566 in 2024.

To address the problem, the report says government officials are pursuing age-related bans, licensing requirements, and other restrictions, noting that New Jersey started implementing what it calls the toughest e-bike measures in July.
