France faces renewed street protests as markets fret over spending

The protests come as investors worry that France has not brought spending under control amid its ongoing debt challenge.

Waves of street protests in France have renewed attention on the country’s debt crisis, as political wrangling appears to be delaying an “escape plan,” according to the Guardian Business.

The outlet notes that the current turmoil has coincided with student protests, while France’s broader policy constraints are also drawing concern from financial markets.

According to the Guardian Business, investors are unhappy with the government’s failure to bring spending to a level that would satisfy market expectations.

The Guardian Economics adds that the issue has roots reaching back to the 2018 gilets jaunes demonstrations, sparked by rising fuel prices, and is resurfacing as Emmanuel Macron prepares for his exit next year.
