Millennium Management plans to rehire James Watson from Balyasny

The planned move comes after Watson joined Balyasny from Millennium in September 2024, and he previously oversaw a trading team of more than 20 people at Millennium.

Millennium Management is set to rehire James Watson, a senior macro portfolio manager who recently left Balyasny Asset Management in London, according to Hedgeweek, citing people familiar with the move.

Watson joined Balyasny from Millennium in September 2024, after spending almost seven years at Millennium. During his earlier tenure at Millennium, the report says he managed a trading team of more than 20 people.

Hedgeweek also reports that Watson built a team at Balyasny, though at a smaller scale, and that the status of the group after his departure remains unclear, with several members reportedly having left the firm.

The article adds that departures linked to the moves include Aditya Singh and George Tyrell, and that Olek Gajowniczek has been linked to Watson’s team. It also notes that John Sun of Balyasny in New York could be moving to Millennium, and that neither Millennium nor Balyasny reportedly commented, while Watson did not respond to a request for comment.
