Solana activates 200-millisecond slots, cutting epoch time
The Oct. 9 change increases block-production opportunities to five per second and reduces epoch length to about 24 hours from 48, according to CryptoSlate.
Solana has doubled its targeted block-production frequency on mainnet by activating 200-millisecond slots, completing a months-long effort to accelerate the network, CryptoSlate reports. The Oct. 9 upgrade cuts Solana’s original 400-millisecond slot target in half, changing the network from 2.5 to five block-production opportunities per second.
CryptoSlate adds that the update also shortens the time to complete a network epoch to about 24 hours from 48 hours. The developer team behind Solana’s Agave validator client, Anza, confirmed the SIMD-0525 upgrade was completed, saying blocks land twice as often as at genesis and that an epoch now takes about a day instead of two.
Solana Foundation vice president of technology Jacob Creech said in the report that the network continues improving with successive software releases, and he identified Alpenglow as the next major upgrade. Early performance data cited by CryptoSlate indicated faster slots after the change, though the network had not yet consistently reached its new target at the time of the update.
