Ukraine condemns US deal to import Russian diesel

The US Treasury is suspending sanctions on Russian diesel exports until April 7, while other Russian assets remain frozen.

Ukraine President Volodymr Zelensky condemned Donald Trump’s announcement of a deal to import Russian diesel into the United States, calling it a “gift” to Vladimir Putin. Zelensky said the arrangement is an “investment in a war that must be ended, not prolonged.”

Trump said Putin agreed to release 300,000 tonnes of diesel immediately for the American and global marketplace, followed by 500,000 tonnes in November and an additional million tonnes afterward. Trump also said another three million tonnes would be delivered soon, depending on whether Russian refineries can operate despite attacks by Ukraine.

The BBC reports that the US Treasury is suspending sanctions on Russian diesel exports until April 7 as part of the deal, but that other assets held in American banks are still frozen. Zelensky added that Russia would repay the diesel with further terror.

Putin said Russia is willing to supply oil and petroleum products to the US and global markets, though his statement did not specify amounts. The BBC reports that Putin’s statement also referenced Russia’s earlier ban on diesel exports earlier this year.
