AI optimism revives claims tax cuts will pay for themselves

A Guardian Economics analysis says past U.S. Republican tax cut promises have consistently failed to boost government finances, even as new AI-driven growth narratives are emerging.

Guardian Economics argues that a familiar U.S. Republican economic promise is resurfacing, this time wrapped in claims of AI-fueled growth. The outlet points to a recurring Reagan-era belief that tax cuts can spur enough economic expansion to replenish government coffers.

The analysis says the promise has historically not held, stating that from the Reagan period onward, Republican tax cuts increased the budget deficit despite expectations that they would pay for themselves.

It also argues that, even with an AI scenario that boosts the economy, the impact on government finances would still be muted, framing the renewed narrative as likely to fail again.
