Church of England slavery compensation plan faces high-profile backlash
The Guardian Business reports that Nigel Biggar has led criticism of the Church of England’s slavery compensation fund, which is intended to spend £100m on atonement for involvement in the slave trade.
The article says that some prominent UK financiers, including Sir Paul Marshall, have either given platforms to critical coverage or are linked to Biggar’s leading opponent, and includes Biggar’s argument that the push is driven by elite efforts to appear progressive.
It also cites remarks from Conservative MP Katie Lam, who said she has more than 100 parish churches in her constituency, many of which she described as crumbling, in the context of the debate over the Church’s proposed spending.
