Government to tighten rules for heating oil market this winter

The ministry said it will review minimum order levels that affect some customers, where tanks typically hold 1,000 to 2,000 litres.

BBC Business reports that heating oil customers facing soaring bills have been promised a regulatory shake-up by the government to better protect consumers and promote competition.

Ministers said they plan to tighten sector rules, improve clarity around compensation routes if things go wrong, and review minimum order levels that apply to some customers. Industry practice cited in the report sets minimum orders at 500 litres for certain consumers.

The article notes that domestic heating oil tanks typically hold between 1,000 and 2,000 litres.

BBC Business also said campaigners have called for heating oil customers to receive the same type of price cap used for regular, variable gas and electricity tariffs across England, Scotland, and Wales, but the government has not indicated it will propose that change or when the stricter heating oil rules would take effect.
