India detains Cockroach Janta Party leaders amid voter-roll standoff
Delhi police removed Jantar Mantar’s protest-site designation and redirected protesters to three other venues.
India detained leaders of the youth-led Cockroach Janta Party again on Tuesday, marking a second detention in days as the standoff with authorities over voter-roll revisions escalated, according to SCMP Economy.
Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das were taken into custody with other members after they jumped barricades to enter Jantar Mantar, one of New Delhi’s main protest venues.
SCMP Economy reports that Delhi police removed Jantar Mantar’s designation as a protest site on Monday and named three alternative venues in the city, prompting criticism from the party and other protesters who had been trying to demonstrate there since the weekend.
Protests in the capital have continued as the CJP and major opposition parties allege electoral manipulation, with demands that the Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, resign and that the voter-roll revisions stop.
