Lynas seeks rare earth separation plant in Brazil's Minas Gerais

The separation plant is part of Lynas’ Brazil expansion, following its $672 million acquisition of Meteoric Resources and BNDES financing talks.

Lynas Rare Earths has presented plans to build a rare earth oxide separation plant in Brazil’s Minas Gerais state, with Mines and Energy Minister Alexandre Silveira telling MINING.COM that the government is considering support for the project.

The plan is linked to Lynas’ expansion into Brazil through its $672 million acquisition of Meteoric Resources, whose Caldeira project hosts one of the world’s largest known ionic-clay rare earth deposits outside China.

Silveira said the Poços de Caldas region facility could help Brazil progress through more of the rare earth value chain, rather than exporting raw materials, as well as strengthen the country’s commercial-scale separation footing.

According to people familiar with discussions cited by MINING.COM, state development bank BNDES is evaluating potential financing for the project.
