State mandates and 401 complexity shift group benefits broker roles
A retirement industry veteran says advisor demand is rising as state-mandated programs expand small-business adoption by about 60% since 2019.
Insurance Business reports that the roles of financial advisors and benefits brokers are increasingly overlapping as retirement plan administration becomes more complex. Aaron Tallen, a retirement industry veteran at Security Benefit in Topeka, Kansas, said benefits brokers who are not adapting may be misreading the market shift as “complexity is going to grow,” and financial advisors are expected to sit at the center of outcomes, capacity, and plan sponsor interest.
Tallen pointed to policy as the catalyst for changing behavior in the group benefits space, saying more plan sponsors are focused on results and that interest is rising in the micro plan segment. He linked the momentum to growing retirement plan adoption among small businesses, citing HR platform Gusto, which reported that adoption has increased by approximately 60% since 2019 and that almost one third of small businesses now offer a plan.
According to Insurance Business, Tallen attributed the surge to the rollout of state-mandated retirement programs, which he said are pushing small business owners to seek guidance for a range of plan types including SEP, SIMPLE, solo 401(k), and small 401(k) arrangements.
