AI adoption in group benefits outpaces readiness to support claims decisions
Cognizant executive Craig Weber said the biggest risk for brokers and carriers is the gap between faster AI deployment and limited progress applying it to claims and underwriting.
Insurance Business reports that the group benefits industry is moving quickly to deploy artificial intelligence, but that many teams are not yet preparing people to work alongside it effectively. Craig Weber, head of insurance strategy at Cognizant, said the gap is the single biggest risk brokers and carriers face right now.
Weber told Insurance Business that AI adoption has accelerated across areas including group health, voluntary benefits, and stop-loss, but most of the industry has not yet brought the technology into claims and underwriting decision-making. He said the sector has largely focused on earlier “efficiency” uses in information technology rather than integrating AI into the core processes.
According to Insurance Business, Weber noted that carriers and administrators that have moved from pilot to production share a sense of urgency to improve the experience for brokers and employer plan sponsors. He also identified the broker channel as a strong opportunity to smooth administration for plan participants, though the report cuts off mid-sentence on additional details.
