Temporary lift on Russian diesel sanctions seen as unlikely to cut prices

Experts cited shipping time and limited volumes, saying any full deal is also challenged by damage to Russian refineries.

A deal announced by US President Donald Trump to temporarily lift sanctions on US imports of Russian diesel is expected to have little meaningful impact on diesel prices for motorists and businesses, according to energy and foreign policy analysts cited by the Guardian.

The analysts said any diesel would take weeks to reach markets, and that the initial quantity is too small to materially affect prices.

Trump’s package includes 300,000 tonnes of diesel released immediately to the American and global marketplace, followed by additional deliveries, but the analysts warned the broader arrangement is unlikely to be completed given damage to Russian refineries.

The announcement also drew anger from Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who said it was “news to me,” after Trump said the agreement was essential to reduce fuel prices following the administration’s decision to go to war against Iran.
