UK court says Chinese law governs victims’ claims to 61,000 Bitcoin

London’s High Court rejected arguments to apply English law to the victims’ ownership claims, saying Chinese law will determine whether they have property rights in the seized Bitcoin.

Chinese fraud victims seeking to recover 61,000 Bitcoin seized by the British government suffered a setback after a UK court ruled that Chinese law, rather than English law, governs their claims, according to Cointelegraph.

Cointelegraph reports that London’s High Court ruled that Chinese law must determine whether the claimants have property rights in the seized Bitcoin, after Justice Mark Turner rejected arguments for applying English law or a combination of English and Chinese law.

The outlet adds that the decision leaves the validity of the victims’ claims for subsequent proceedings, with the court focusing on which legal system applies to determine property rights in the assets.
