UK grocery prices rise as shoppers lean on supermarket promotions

Retail analysts said supermarket prices were 2.5% higher year over year for the four weeks to Oct. 4.

Grocery price inflation in the UK has picked up, prompting shoppers to rely more on supermarket special offers, according to Worldpanel by Numerator data cited by the Guardian Business.

Worldpanel said supermarket prices were up 2.5% year over year in the four weeks to 4 October, compared with 2.3% the prior month, while the price of chocolates fell in the run-up to Halloween.

Spending on promotions over the last month was more than £250 million higher than a year ago, with many shoppers using deals to keep grocery bills down and make pricier items or larger packs more affordable, the outlet reported.

The Guardian Business quoted Fraser McKevitt, head of retail and consumer insight at Worldpanel, saying shoppers have been responding to conditions in the autumn shopping period.
