UK student ‘super app’ uses servers tied to Tencent on US blacklist

The app, marketed for Gen Z, relies on a German-based Tencent subsidiary after Tencent was listed by the US Defense Department in January 2026.

A new messaging and payments “super app” marketed to British students, ZyMix, is using servers owned by a Chinese company that the US has placed on a military blacklist, the outlet reports. The US allegation links the company indirectly to the People’s Liberation Army, according to the article.

ZyMix has a contract with a German-based subsidiary of Tencent Holdings, which the US Department of Defense says is indirectly affiliated with the Chinese military. Tencent Holdings was added in January 2026 to the DoD’s Section 1260H list of Chinese military companies.

The platform is being pushed on university campuses as what it describes as the UK’s first super app for Gen Z, combining chat, payments, and community features, according to the report.
