UK to strengthen cyber defences amid calls for AI safety efforts

The UK’s AI minister said Britain cannot rely entirely on tech companies to police their own AI models and will urge frontier AI developers to do more on safety.

Kanishka Narayan, the UK’s AI minister, said Britain needs to strengthen its cyber defenses, arguing the country cannot rely entirely on technology firms to police their own AI models amid rising global concerns about AI dangers, according to the Guardian Business.

Narayan said companies developing frontier AI should increase safety efforts, and he said Britain should build more of its own AI infrastructure.

The speech in west London is described by the outlet as the first since Andy Burnham made AI a cabinet-level brief.

The announcement also comes as Geoffrey Irving, a former chief scientist at the UK’s AI Security Institute, which tests the most powerful systems, is mentioned in the report.
