UK van drivers could pay about £2.5bn extra in diesel costs this year
Analysis estimates the average diesel bill for drivers rises to £1,965 from £1,294, as diesel prices reached record highs amid a global fuel shortage.
Millions of British van drivers and companies that operate diesel vans and pickups face a combined £2.5bn in extra diesel costs this year, according to figures cited by The Guardian.
The analysis, using estimates from Moneysupermarket, says the average fuel bill could reach £1,965, up from £1,294, and that owners could collectively spend nearly £8.5bn at the pump this year.
The reported estimate for this year is higher than the £5.95bn spent last year, and the outlet attributes the sharp rise to diesel prices hitting record highs due to a global fuel shortage.
The Road Haulage Association said raising fuel duty amid high prices at the pumps would be a “hammer blow” for companies, adding to calls for the government to scrap its planned fuel duty rise.
