Hong Kong regulator orders Cathay review after Nato jet interception

The Civil Aviation Department said its preliminary checks found the flight stayed on its authorized route and arrived safely after temporarily losing contact over Romanian airspace.

Hong Kong’s Civil Aviation Department has ordered Cathay Pacific Airways to complete a comprehensive review of an incident in which a London-bound flight was intercepted by NATO fighter jets after the aircraft temporarily lost contact with air traffic controllers over Romanian airspace last week, according to SCMP Economy.

The regulator said it was expressing serious concern for a second consecutive day, and it set out the review parameters for Cathay, including the aircraft’s operational condition, the setting of communications equipment, and how communications were handled with the local air traffic control unit.

SCMP Economy reported that the CAD’s preliminary information indicated the flight adhered to its authorized routing throughout the journey, and that the aircraft later arrived at its destination safely.

Cathay was instructed to submit the report following the regulator’s order, SCMP Economy added.
