Chinese academic urges open-source AI push to counter US dominance
The warning argues China should redesign AI talent funding and shift foundational research from state universities to major tech enterprises.
A Chinese academic warned that China faces an existential “knockout game” in artificial intelligence versus the United States, saying the country risks losing technological sovereignty and national security if it does not overhaul its innovation system. According to Huang Ping of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, the country must pursue measures to offset what he described as the high cost and market dominance of closed-source American AI models.
South China Morning Post reports Huang urged a stronger backing for open-source AI as one way for China to reduce reliance on US models. He also called for reforms in how China cultivates and funds AI talent, describing them as unconventional.
Huang said China should move foundational AI research away from bureaucratic state universities and toward leading technology companies. He argued that the new approach should place leading tech enterprises within each AI subsector as the main drivers of talent development and foundational research, breaking from existing talent and scientific evaluation frameworks.
The comments were shared in an online article published Wednesday by GBA Review, a social media account run by the Institute for International Affairs, Qianhai, where Huang serves as deputy director, according to SCMP Economy.
