Cover Whale names executive to lead new Breakwater Markets brokerage

Breakwater Markets is positioned as a digital wholesale brokerage for commercial transportation risks, built to place non-standard surplus lines alongside Cover Whale’s existing programs.

Cover Whale Insurance Solutions LLC has appointed Roman Atkielski as executive vice president of its newly launched Breakwater Markets unit, according to Risk & Insurance. Breakwater Markets is described as a new digital wholesale brokerage focused on commercial transportation risks, operating alongside Cover Whale’s existing programs.

Atkielski joins from Jencap Insurance Services, where he served as senior vice president and National Practice Leader for Transportation, overseeing the firm’s wholesale transportation brokerage division across the United States. Prior to that, he co-founded High Point Underwriters, a program administrator focused on independent contractor truckers that K2 Insurance Services later acquired.

Breakwater Markets will use Cover Whale’s infrastructure and market relationships to place non-standard, surplus lines and other complex risks, the outlet reported. Cover Whale’s platform currently processes close to $7 billion in annual premium submissions, and Breakwater aims to capture more of those placements within the group.

In his remarks, Atkielski said Cover Whale has built a strong platform in a challenging part of the market and that Breakwater is meant to give agents a straightforward way to place business that may not fit within core programs, while maintaining service and execution.
