Iran buries Khamenei in Mashhad as new US hostility emerges

The burial comes after an Israeli strike killed Khamenei in late February and follows a fresh escalation involving the US after an accord last month to end the war.

Iranians loyal to the Islamic republic gathered through the night for the burial of supreme leader Ali Khamenei in his hometown of Mashhad, with mourners calling for revenge and rejecting any compromise with the West, Agence France-Presse reported.

Khamenei was killed by an Israeli strike in late February, on the first day of a US-Israeli war against Iran, ending more than three and a half decades in power. His chosen burial site was the shrine of Imam Reza, described as the holiest place for Shia Muslims in Iran, and crowds lined the route as a helicopter carried the coffin across the final stretch because the main avenue was expected to be congested.

AFP said the area around the shrine remained busy in the evening, with religious chants audible and worshippers lighting candles. With new hostilities breaking out with the US even after an accord last month to end the war, at least one fighter jet escorted the plane carrying the coffin to Mashhad.
