Judge OKs $46.75 million settlement for 23andMe data breach victims
The payout is reduced by $14.3 million already distributed from the case, bringing the additional payments to $32.5 million.
Insurance Journal reports that a U.S. bankruptcy judge approved a $46.75 million settlement for victims of a 2023 data breach at 23andMe.
The breach exposed genetic and other personal information of an estimated 6.9 million customers, and Judge Brian Walsh said the deal was fair and equitable and in the best interest of a trust overseen by the company’s bankruptcy administrator.
The settlement amount will be reduced by $14.29 million previously disbursed, leaving $32.46 million in additional payout, according to Insurance Journal.
The company, based in Palo Alto, California, filed for Chapter 11 protection in March 2025, citing the breach, related litigation, and increased competition and falling demand for genetic testing products. California Attorney General Rob Bonta is also suing over the breach, seeking potentially millions of dollars in civil fines and arguing bankruptcy court should not take away state courts’ jurisdiction over state law enforcement actions.
