Most Americans say affordability crisis is worsening as gas and groceries bite
The Harris Poll finds 57% of Americans believe the economy is getting worse, up from 46% in February, while faith in the federal government to ease costs remains low at two-thirds.
A new Harris Poll conducted for The Guardian finds that 95% of Americans believe the US is in an affordability crisis, with about half of respondents saying they struggle to pay for everyday necessities such as groceries and gas.
The survey says 57% of polled Americans believe the overall economy is getting worse, up from 46% in February, while fewer people now say the economy is improving, 16% versus 28% previously.
Harris data also shows the affordability struggle cuts across party lines, with roughly half of Democrats, Republicans, and independents reporting trouble affording daily items. Two-thirds of Americans, including 49% of Republicans, said they have little faith the federal government will improve the cost-of-living crisis they face.
The Guardian reports the poll took place against the backdrop of the war in Iran and before the midterm elections this fall, and notes Republican views have turned less optimistic since February, with 27% now saying the economy is getting better compared with 49% then.
