Xiaomi launches Sky Nomad SUV line as it ramps EV R&D

Xiaomi, the smartphone maker turned EV challenger in mainland China, said it will assemble and sell models under a new sport-utility vehicle lineup called Sky Nomad, as it steps up research and development amid a slowdown in domestic sales, according to SCMP Economy.

The company described Sky Nomad as a range aimed at “smart, adaptable, large-space SUVs,” framing it as part of its efforts in car manufacturing over the past five years.

Analysts and dealers cited by SCMP Economy expect Xiaomi’s first production models to use extended-range technology, including small internal combustion engines that can generate additional power to recharge the battery when needed.

SCMP Economy also noted that the move targets competition from domestic EV rivals such as Li Auto and Xpeng, as Xiaomi looks to attract consumers with longer-range options.
