Bitcoin ownership lawsuit narrows as 44 defendants are dropped

The July 7 discontinuance affects only a small slice of the 39,069 wallets targeted, leaving most of the alleged long-dormant holdings still at issue.

A lawsuit seeking legal ownership of long-dormant Bitcoin addresses, including wallets linked by researchers to Bitcoin’s earliest mining era, has narrowed after plaintiffs voluntarily dropped 44 defendants tied to movements of funds after the case was filed, according to CryptoSlate.

CryptoSlate reported the July 7 voluntary discontinuance removes only a small portion of the overall target set, which the filing identifies as 39,069 wallets. The change therefore reduces the scope against those specific parties, but does not materially shrink the broader universe of addresses at the center of the dispute.

While the dropped defendants had allegedly moved funds after the suit began, the case continues to seek outcomes tied to the ownership of the long-dormant addresses, meaning the remaining targeted wallets remain part of the litigation.

CryptoSlate framed the dispute as a high-stakes battle in which ownership claims could affect the value attributed to the contested Bitcoin holdings.
