Home swaps help travelers cut holiday costs amid higher living expenses
One family said it saved about £2,500 on accommodation per trip and paid an annual membership fee to the booking platform it uses.
Home exchange, an arrangement where families swap homes during holidays, is becoming more common as travelers look for ways to manage costs, according to BBC Business.
Henry Vanderpump, his wife Elliw, and their two children have completed two home exchange trips in the past two years and plan another this summer, staying in similar-sized homes in Hamburg and Copenhagen while the other family stays in their five-bedroom house in rural Cheshire.
The Vanderpumps said they do not pay accommodation to either side, but they pay an annual membership fee to Home Link to book exchanges, and they estimated savings of around £2,500 on accommodation per trip plus about £700 on transport when they swapped cars too.
BBC Business also noted that exchanges typically require coordination before guests arrive, including multiple messages through a platform, and that some participants use points-based setups, such as hosting travelers while they are away, to book future trips.
