Okinawa delegation visits Beijing Ryukyu Kingdom cemetery amid tensions
The Okinawan delegation traveled to a Beijing memorial site that includes the graves of more than 10 Ryukyu Kingdom officials and Qing dynasty envoys, according to SCMP Economy.
Members of a delegation from Japan’s Okinawa prefecture visited a historic Ryukyu Kingdom cemetery in Beijing in June, paying tribute to ancestors amid heightened China Japan tensions, according to SCMP Economy.
The visit, first made public by China state-linked Global Times in late July, involved about a dozen delegates traveling to a site southeast of Beijing, where more than six centuries of ties between China and the Ryukyu Kingdom are memorialized.
During the memorial ceremony, the delegates carried out traditional rituals, including incense and liquor, and some wore traditional attire, SCMP Economy reported.
SCMP Economy also cited Xinhua in noting that the Beijing site includes the graves of more than 10 Ryukyu Kingdom officials and Qing dynasty envoys, including an envoy who objected to Japan’s 1879 annexation, and a student who took his own life to protest the islands’ loss of independence.
