Johor election jitters rise after remark tied to Najib pardon calls
Nazifuddin Najib linked BN’s election performance to public hopes for Najib Razak’s pardon, after a prior Pardons Board decision reduced the sentence to six years and cut the fine to 50 million ringgit.
Malaysia’s Johor state election on Saturday has become more politically volatile after a remark tying Barisan Nasional’s performance to calls for jailed former prime minister Najib Razak’s pardon, according to SCMP Economy.
SCMP Economy reports that on July 2, Nazifuddin Najib, who heads BN in Langkawi, told reporters that if BN wins big in Johor it would send a signal that voters “still cherish” Najib, using a supporters’ nickname for him.
The story adds that the pardon context comes from a 2024 decision by Malaysia’s Pardons Board, which reportedly reduced Najib’s sentence to six years and lowered the fine to 50 million ringgit after the sentence was previously cut.
SCMP Economy also notes the timeline implied by that decision, saying Najib could be released by August 2028.
