Bangladesh PM invite to BRICS summit in New Delhi next September
Bangladesh, a non-BRICS member, was invited as a special guest because it currently chairs BIMSTEC.
The South China Morning Post reports that India has invited Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to attend a BRICS summit in New Delhi in September, a move viewed in Dhaka as an opportunity to repair ties after a turbulent period between the neighbors.
If Rahman accepts, he would meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi directly for the first time since Rahman became Bangladesh’s leader following elections in February, according to the report.
The Bangladesh Foreign Ministry said Dhaka received the invitation and forwarded it to the prime minister’s office, the outlet added.
Bangladesh was invited as a special guest despite not being a BRICS member, because it currently chairs the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, known as BIMSTEC.
