LNG tankers continue transiting Hormuz amid US-Iran tensions

Kpler data cited by Reuters showed five Qatar-linked LNG ballast tankers entered the strait over recent days, after at least four vessels had previously turned away from the waterway due to strike threats.

Close to half a dozen liquefied natural gas carriers continued to move through the Strait of Hormuz in the past few days, even as hostilities have recently returned between the United States and Iran, according to OilPrice, citing Kpler data reported by Reuters.

Kpler data cited by Reuters indicated five ballast LNG tankers entered the chokepoint in recent days, four of them linked to Qatar, with the fifth owned by a Greek shipping company. In the same period, six LNG carriers exited the strait, and the vessels were previously seen outside Hormuz earlier this month.

An earlier report cited by OilPrice said at least four LNG tankers turned away after attempting to pass through Hormuz, citing renewed threats of Iranian strikes, with the Marine Insight News report using data from Kpler and LSEG. The outlet added that since the war began, 16 LNG cargoes have left Qatar’s Ras Laffan hub, with 10 more loaded and shipped from the Emirati Das Island terminal.

Separately, Reuters data cited by OilPrice showed 22 Japan-linked vessels passed through the Strait of Hormuz in recent days and were heading to Japan, including six crude oil tankers that traversed the strait between July 7 and 9, while four Japanese-linked vessels remained in the strait.
