OpenAI rolls out GPT-5.6 with tiered pricing for cheaper AI use
GPT-5.6 launches with three models, including a lightweight Luna aimed at low inference cost, but China-based rivals still price below OpenAI for both input and output tokens.
OpenAI introduced GPT-5.6 in China on Thursday, positioning the release around cost efficiency even as the service remains more expensive than local alternatives, according to SCMP Economy.
The new lineup includes three models tailored to different capabilities, speeds and price points: the flagship Sol, the balanced Terra and the lightweight Luna. OpenAI said Terra delivers performance comparable to GPT-5.5 at roughly half the price, while Luna is engineered for robust capabilities at low inference cost.
Pricing shared in the report shows GPT-5.6 Sol at US$5 per million input tokens and US$30 per million output tokens, Terra at US$2.50 for input and US$15 for output, and Luna at US$1 for input and US$6 for output.
Despite the reductions versus previous products, OpenAI’s models still cost more than major China-based rivals cited by SCMP Economy, including Zhipu AI’s GLM-5.2 at about US$1.40 per million input tokens and US$4.40 per million output tokens, and DeepSeek V4 at up to US$0.44 per million input tokens and US$0.87 per million output tokens.
