Philippines plans military space center by 2028 to boost South China Sea surveillance
The plan calls for starting small and using military satellites to support persistent surveillance, communications, and command.
The Philippines is preparing to build a military space centre by 2028, aiming to strengthen surveillance, communications, and command across its archipelago, including contested areas in the South China Sea, according to SCMP Economy.
The outlet reports that officials describe the effort as an initial, smaller centre that could later expand into a space command or space force, with a military-satellite focus.
Analysts cited by SCMP Economy said progress may be limited by technical, financial, and manpower hurdles involved in converting space assets into operational military capability.
SCMP Economy also notes that a space command would be intended to provide a sovereign platform for persistent surveillance across both the South China Sea and the wider Philippine archipelago.
