China warns bloggers against charging for AI-made typhoon forecasts
China Media Group cited the Meteorology Law, saying forecasts and severe weather warnings must go through a centralized release system run by official meteorological stations.
As residents of eastern China prepare for Typhoon Bavi to make landfall, some social media bloggers have turned to AI weather models to post typhoon forecasts, drawing criticism from state media, according to SCMP Economy.
China Media Group said some bloggers using open-source AI weather model data have issued predictions for specific locations and, in some cases, offered forecasts for a fee, which it warned could raise legal issues under China’s Meteorology Law.
The broadcaster noted that under the Meteorology Law of the People’s Republic of China, public weather alerts are subject to a centralized release system, and official meteorological stations are the only authorized issuers of forecasts and severe weather warnings.
Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology researcher Huang Xiang told China Media Group that the centralized system is intended to prevent public confusion from unofficial forecasts.
