Guardian Metal taps Montana partners for a US tungsten processing pilot
The pilot will move an initial 250 to 400 tonnes of legacy ore from Nevada to Montana for trial processing, with first shipments expected by late summer 2026.
Guardian Metal Resources has launched a tungsten mining and recovery pilot program with the Montana Mining Association, working alongside Montana Technological University and the U.S. Army Research Laboratory, Mining.com reports.
The company will supply stockpiled legacy ore from its Tempiute tungsten project in Nevada as a US feedstock source. An initial 250 to 400 tonnes of stockpiled legacy ore will be transported from Tempiute to Philipsburg, Montana, where partner facilities will process the material on a trial basis.
The effort is aimed at upscaling domestic tungsten-rich sources, including historical mine tailings and legacy ore stockpiles, to evaluate pathways toward commercial production of tungsten metal powder for defense-relevant applications within the US.
Tungsten is described as a key material for defense applications such as penetrators and is required in US Department of Defense contracts. Guardian Metal said the first shipments of legacy ore are expected by late summer 2026, as it seeks to advance Tempiute and its Pilot Mountain project as part of a domestic tungsten supply chain.
