Trump envoy Steve Daines to return to Beijing for Xi summit agenda talks
The August trip is aimed at narrowing differences on issues expected to dominate a summit between Xi and US President Donald Trump planned for September.
South China Morning Post reports that US Senator Steve Daines is expected to return to China for another round of talks as preparations continue for President Xi Jinping’s planned September visit to Washington.
According to people familiar with the preparations, Daines’ trip is intended to help finalize the summit agenda, which both sides hope will be high-stakes, with Daines acting as a backchannel intermediary between Washington and Beijing.
The outlet says Daines visited Beijing in May during efforts to stabilize relations ahead of Trump’s trip to the Chinese capital later that month, and that he has been carrying messages ahead of leader-level engagements.
One source cited by SCMP described Daines as an effective channel for communicating Trump’s concerns to the Chinese side and vice versa as the preparations enter their final stretch.
