Trump threatens Iran over Strait of Hormuz amid open tensions
The White House demanded Iran publicly state the Strait of Hormuz is open and that ships crossing it will not be attacked, but Tehran has not complied and says it wants to keep control and charge transit fees.
US President Donald Trump issued a new threat against Iran on Saturday, citing the heightened Middle East tensions after the funeral of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with the episode drawing renewed attention to the regional security situation.
According to the report, Trump made the comments on social media after senior US officials demanded that Iran deliver a public statement saying the Strait of Hormuz is open and that ships crossing the vital corridor would not be attacked. The outlet said Iran has not made that statement, instead insisting the route remain under its control and that it be allowed to charge ships moving through the strait.
The report also ties the latest flare-up to recent violence in the corridor, saying there were multiple days of US air strikes targeting Iran and Iranian retaliatory fire across the Middle East.
The outlet further said the strikes were sparked by Iran’s attack on three ships in the strait earlier this week, and it quoted Trump saying, in substance, that “1000 missiles are locked and loaded” and that more would follow if Iran acts on its threat.
